Message from the Director
Message from the Director: April 2019
Dear colleagues,
As the HBI’s Director, it is my absolute priority to safeguard and uphold the scientific integrity of HBI members, trainees, staff and all HBI-associated research programs. This is especially essential in our partnerships with external organizations and industry. Every member should have a sense of academic freedom and independence to pursue partnerships they feel are beneficial, without external pressure. Should any concerns arise when working with external partners, please inform me or another member of the HBI core team right away so that we can advocate on your behalf.
It is my great pleasure to welcome two new members to the HBI: Dr. Michael Esser and Dr. Quan Long. Welcome aboard – we look forward to working with you.
The coming weeks are full of exciting events here at the HBI, and I hope you will mark your calendar for at least a few of them:
- Lecture of a Lifetime with keynote Dr. Glenda MacQueen on May 2;
- Computational Neuroscience sessions on May 7 and 24;
- Think Big: The Anxious Brain, with Drs. Paul Arnold and Frank MacMaster at the Calgary Public Library on May 10;
- a Lunch & Learn on bipolar disorder with keynotes Dr. Scott Patten and Kaj Korvela, presented by The Mathison Centre, also on May 10 at the Calgary Public Library;
- the Neuro Nexus Hackathon Challenge Demo Day, at the Calgary Public Library on May 13;
- HBI Research Day on May 30 with keynote Dr. Kevin Staley
Suffice to say there are too many exceptional events on the horizon to include them all here. Read on in Brainworks for a listing of our upcoming events and how you can register.
Thanks to those of you who have recently let us know about your news and discoveries. Keep them coming! Simply contact the HBI’s senior communications advisor Holly Kerr. The work done by all of you – our members and your research teams – positions the HBI as an international leader in brain and mental health research, education and community outreach. This, in turn, attracts significant support from our philanthropic community. Many thanks for your commitment and ongoing contributions to our collective vision.
