Message from the Director

Message from the Director: November/December 2019

Dear Colleagues,

It has been an interesting and highly productive fall session. As the calendar year winds down, I want to thank each of you for your never-ending thirst for knowledge, and your enthusiasm to share discoveries with colleagues at the HBI and stakeholders in the community. Our members and trainees continue to achieve great success through funding competitions and award programs, and your contributions to valuable partnerships and community outreach activities further strengthen the HBI’s reputation as an international centre of excellence in neuroscience and mental health research and education.

I’d like to give a special shout-out to our trainees who have been busy publicly representing the HBI and Mathison Centre recently. Your participation at many events over the past year and increasingly in these last few months has been invaluable – events like Beakerhead, the Cumming School of Medicine’s (CSM) first open house; Think Big: Your brain on cannabis; The Dean’s Talk with a focus on mental health; and Think Big: Are we wired to be social? Thank you for your terrific initiative and participation.

Join me in extending a warm welcome to our newest HBI members; we look forward to working with you:

  • Dr. Amanda Black, PhD
  • Dr. Carlos Camara-Lemarroy, PhD
  • Dr. George Francis, MD
  • Dr. Pierre Levan, PhD
  • Dr. Lori Montgomery, MD
  • Dr. Stephanie Plamondon, MD
  • Dr. Morris Scantlebury, MD
  • Dr. Dallas Seitz, MD/PhD,

We will be equally active in our communities throughout the coming weeks and in the New Year. Please mark your calendars for some upcoming events:

  • January 29 –Science in the Cinema, film to be confirmed, presented by the CSM and The Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education, in conjunction with Bell Let’s Talk Day
  • March 18 – Science in the Cinema presented by the CSM and HBI, film to be confirmed

Read on in Brainworks for more information about these events and others. I hope to see you there!

In closing, I want to reiterate how proud I am of our Institute, and of every single one of our members, trainees and staff. Thank you for your continued support and dedication. We at the HBI are committed to continue providing rich teaching, learning and research opportunities for our membership while operating in a fiscally restrained environment.

I wish you and your families a peaceful and fulfilling holiday season, and look forward to all that the upcoming year will bring.
